Guide to Productive Waking and Baking

wake and bake breakfast

Having a morning routine is key to setting a positive tone for the rest of the day. That’s why on those days where you stay in bed longer than you should, you often feel like the rest of the day is dragging. Whether it’s walking the dog, sipping a coffee, taking a steaming hot shower, or crushing it at the gym before work, a morning routine will help you get off on the right foot. Some cannabis users have a classic morning ritual too, the wake and bake.

What does wake and bake mean?

No, you don’t have to search the cupboards for your KitchenAid mixer (though a moist muffin will be more than welcome after you’re done). When someone says they like to wake n bake, they are referring to smoking marijuana first thing in the morning. Smoking right after rolling out of bed is an enjoyable morning ritual for many stoners and can be compared to brewing and savoring a cup of Joe to kickstart the day on a positive note.

Should I wake and bake before work?

Surprisingly to some, many regular cannabis smokers have a heightened desire to get things done, improved creativity, and more of a goal-oriented mindset after they partake. Getting things done around the house like cleaning or yardwork are some activities you can do after waking and baking. Of course, this spark of motivation is not the case for everyone and the weed strain you choose makes a big difference. If you’re thinking about doing a wake and bake before work, think twice. Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and depending on what state you’re in and what kind of work you do (and if you have a medical card), showing up blazed to the office could get you in a lot of trouble. If you’re one of the lucky ones who are your own boss and can go about your day and get work done while high, then go ahead and give it a try. You may even want to do a wake and bake if you know you’ll have a slow work from home day. These are a few ways to stay productive while high:

Make a to-do list and set goals for the day

Some smokers need more of a push to stay on track. While still in bed (or the night before) be sure to write a to-do list or set goals to accomplish in case you get distracted and forget everything that needs to get done. A simple pen and notepad are fine, but if you’ll be running around town it may be easier to use your Reminders or Notes smartphone app. Don’t forget to check things off as you complete them.

Start out slow

If you have a busy day ahead, you probably don’t want too much of a head buzz first thing in the morning. This is the time of the day that you’ll get the highest since you haven’t been smoking for roughly seven or eight hours and your tolerance will be at an all time low. Start off slow with just a hit or two and assess how you feel. Remember that all strains produce different effects, so choose one that has been reviewed by other smokers who wake and bake like the ones below.

Wake and bake strains

Start your day off right with a sativa or sativa-dominant hybrid cannabis strain that won’t make you too relaxed or low energy. In addition, you can now pick bud for additional wellness properties like stress reduction, enhanced creativity, or feelings of euphoria depending on your morning mood.

  • Super Lemon Haze- Also known as SLH, this invigorating strain has two Cannabis Cups to its name for its multi-dimensional aroma, flavor and effects. Choose this strain if you’re more of the laidback, chill type who could use a boost of energy to get through a busy day. As the name suggests, tart, zesty, and citrus-like notes dominate the experience, but aren’t overpowering. THC content typically runs between 16% and 20%.
  • Purple Diesel- Most stoners expect indica effects when smoking a purple nug, but that is not the case with Purple D. This strain is great for daytime smoking because of its energetic, yet focused and alertness inducing effects with a little body high. The West Coast strain is a cross between Pre-98 Bubba Kush and Sour Diesel, and is the perfect choice before your sunrise yoga sesh or morning workout.
  • Durban Poison - Often called the “espresso of weed”, if you find that you woke up tired and uninspired, reach for Durban Poison as your morning pick-me-up. Though average in the THC department, this South African strain will get your creative juices flowing and help you remain productive and on top of your to-do list. This bud is high in terpinolene terpene, which gives it a sweet, fruity aroma.
  • Island Sweet Skunk - The average, not too high THC content of this citrusy strain gives off minimal psychoactive effects necessary for a balanced morning ritual. The sweet, grapefruit-like scent pairs well with a morning smoothie and is considered one of the most energizing strains out there. If you suffer from morning anxiety or stress, check with your local dispensary to see if they carry the high CBD variety of Island Sweet Skunk.
  • Blue Dream - Expect a happy, uplifting effect without too much of a head buzz from this energizing California hybrid that’s a cross between the Haze and Blueberry strains. The popular bud has high myrcene terpene content with an herbal, sweet berry scent.

Other strains you can try in the morning are Sour Diesel, Green Crack, White Widow, Jack Herer, Pineapple Express, and Chocolope.
