Nearly every cannabis enthusiast has smoked or at least heard of the Gorilla Glue strain, originally bred by Nevada-based cultivators at GG Strains. They have since developed many varieties of the original Gorilla Glue strain, which is always high on the list of the most legendary cannabis strains in the world. Gorilla Glue is prized for its potency and euphoric effects and its newest hybrid, Gorilla Glue 5 (GG5), is no exception.
Though Josey Whales and Lone Watty, breeders and founders of GG Strains were very experienced in medicinal and recreational cannabis breeding and had created several popular strains, the brand didn’t become a household name until around 2015. At this time, they entered their latest creation into the High Times San Bernardino (LA) Medical Cannabis Cup and took home the first place trophy for their strain named Original Glue (fka Gorilla Glue 4 or GG4). It also won first place in the High Times Michigan Cup and the High Times Jamaica World Cup where it instantly became obvious that a legend was born. GG4 was the most sought after dry herb at the time and was cross bred, faked, and imitated by many cannabis cultivators around the world. In 2017, GG4 was also named one of the strongest cannabis strains on earth according to High Times. Why all this talk about GG4 you ask? Because Gorilla Glue 4 is one of the parent strains of Gorilla Glue 5.
Gorilla Glue 5 Strain Review
What strain is Gorilla Glue #5?
Referred to as Gorilla Glue 5, New Glue, Gorilla Glue #5, or simply GG5, this potent cannabis strain had a lot to live up to because of its famous parents, but seems to have surpassed them both. Gorilla Glue 5 was bred by crossing Sister Glue (GG1) with Original Glue (GG4). To break down the genetics further, GG4 is an indica-dominant phenotype with the best aspects of its genetics inherited from its parent strains, Chem’s Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel. Sister Glue (GG1) is a very potent and tasty indica-dominant strain with many Cannabis Cup awards under its belt. It got its name since it is the “sister” strain to GG4 since they share the same strains as parents.
Is Gorilla Glue 5 indica or sativa?
Like both of its parents and all the other Gorilla Glue strains, GG5 has an indica-dominant hybrid phenotype. This top-shelf cannabis has a genetic makeup of roughly 79% indica and 21% sativa. Gorilla Glue 5 shares the high THC level of GG1 with the pungent diesel-like and earthy aroma of GG4. GG5 has between 27% and 30% THC, one of the highest levels available. Myrcene, also found in hops, lemongrass, mango, and basil is the most prominent terpene found in GG5 and has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antiseptic properties. It’s the most common terpene found in roughly 20% of all commercial marijuana strains.
Gorilla Glue 5 effects
It has very strong indica effects. You can expect extreme relaxation, a feeling of deep calm, and a powerful couch lock. The effects of GG5 are even stronger than its parent strains. Gorilla Glue 5 is often preferred by medical marijuana patients struggling with insomnia, any type of pain, anxiety, and stress. It also works wonderfully as a muscle relaxer.

Gorilla Glue 5 Strain Reviews From Users
The following GG5 reviews were taken from Leafly users who reported their effects and personal experience with this strain.
Potency
“This strain is amazing, I am a heavy smoker and even I find myself very high with a little amount. Very potent, and comparable to the intensity of edibles if enough is smoked. Very cerebral and a strong sense of time and space distortion. I find that usually after smoking GG#5 I'm laying on the couch on my phone looking up information or documentaries. Makes you mentally alert in a way but physically truly (gorilla) glued and couch locked. Great for pain and sleep, also very good for when you're feeling down. This one will always be on my top #5.”
“I've had GG #1 and #4 and all I can say is Gorilla glue #5 is by far the most potent. GG#5 doesn't hit you right away, but when it kicks in, it leaves me stuck wherever I may be at the time.”
“I have a high tolerance and I got as high as my first time.”
Medical benefits and effects
“...I recommend for those who need to smoke at night to sleep, this is a perfect downer.”
“Very heavy come down. Great for after dinner/work strain. Very strong medicine for pain, insomnia, depression (it will make you laugh). Enjoy.”
“It’s my favorite! I tried it last night and I was blown away by the effects. It delivers a head to toe full body high, good for relaxing...It’s relaxing, euphoric, makes you giggle and happy. It's good for pain too. All muscle aches disappeared when we smoked. It is dank ! We only smoked a small joint and we were LIT!”
“Pros: Good for pain relief and relaxation. Hits the body first then creeps into the mind for an uplifting, occasionally giggly feeling. Can help with sleep. Cons: Dry mouth. Harder to find as most dispensaries carry GG4. Overall/Other: More indica than GG4, this strain hits the body more than the mind...Has a piney taste with little earthiness hints.”
