You’ve probably heard many different terms like hemp oil, CBD oil, hemp seed oil, CBD hemp oil, and others. So if you’re wondering if hemp seed oil and CBD oil are the same thing, you’re not alone. Since many people within the cannabis community and even those in the cannabis industry use these terms interchangeably, casual users can easily become confused and misled. This typically ends with unwanted or mistaken purchases.
The terminology is very confusing, however hemp oil and hemp seed oil are not the same thing. The term hemp oil is often used to talk about hemp-derived CBD oil extracted from the flowers and leaves (not the seeds) of the hemp plant. Hemp seed oil is created from only the seeds of the hemp plant and is used in cooking due to its health benefits and high nutritional value. While hemp seed oil has valuable vitamins, omega-3 fatty acid, and proteins, it does not contain any active CBD compounds. Hemp seed oil is often sold at grocery stores and markets next to similar cooking oils like flaxseed oil and grape seed oil. If you are looking to benefit from the naturally occurring cannabinoid CBD, then you want to look for full-spectrum CBD oil or CBD hemp oil. Hemp derived CBD is 100% legal in the U.S. and can be purchased online, in most dispensaries, and some naturopathic or health stores.
It is important to note that hemp and marijuana are both the same plant species called cannabis. Despite both being cannabis, hemp and marijuana are quite different when it comes to resin content, potency, usage, and legislation. In the past, hemp plants are used for clothing, cordage, textiles, and food. It is distinguished by law as a cannabis plant with 0.3% or less THC content, while anything over this is considered marijuana and falls under a different set of laws. Hemp plants are often much more potent in CBD and since laws regarding hemp plants are more lenient, most CBD products are derived from hemp rather than marijuana, though the latter is also possible.
